The decompensation of the company manager
This "decompensation" concerns all types of people but I have particularly noticed it in positions of responsibility but a self-employed person, like an employee, can be affected.
We read a lot of articles about the well-being of employees, but very little about the well-being of leaders and managers.
The purpose of this article is to describe a taboo phenomenon but much more frequent than we think for these leaders / managers who are often obliged to put on a good face every day.
As an osteopath, many of these profiles consult me and drop their masks during the consultations where they can finally release their tensions.
The hard numbers from the state of business leaders:
63% of business leaders (of SMEs) are stressed.
42% suffer from anxiety
½ suffer from sleep disorders
1 to 2 company managers commit suicide every day (according to the Observatory of Managers' Health)
What is the decompensation of the entrepreneur?
Think about the time when you've done your work, closed all your files (or almost all of them), and you're ready to go on vacation. Now think about the time when the next day or two after your vacation starts, your back or neck is completely blocked and you're stuck in bed, ruining your few days off.
Well, that's the "decompensation of the entrepreneur"!
Why the name "decompensation"?
Throughout the year, throughout the weeks, the company manager or the executive will take it upon himself. Of course it is unconscious, his mind will take over his body and he will manage to do his days without pain, without too much fatigue, with sometimes with some small signs (headaches, discomfort in the back, etc. but who has no pain?!). The body of the leader manages to compensate for the small problems, imbalances.
But once the brain understands that it can relax and breathe, the body will unconsciously stop compensating and will therefore decompensate, let go and then it's a mess! The tower that had been oscillating for some time, collapses...
Examples of the factors of decompensation of the entrepreneur:
It is not only the arrival in vacations that will make the leader decompensate, the list can be long, and it is important to remember that it is not only the bad news that is the source of decompensation. Here are some examples:
- When you finally finish your fundraising ;
- When you close a termination proceeding;
- When you finalize a complicated negotiation with a collaborator or a client ;
- When you complete a particularly ambitious business or technical sprint;
- When you finish a seminar / team building because even if it's a fun moment it's a lot of pressure;
- When you leave a room after a pitch or conference.
Symptoms of decompensation of the entrepreneur:
- Fatigue / exhaustion
- Acute torticollis
- Acute back pain / lumbago
- Outbreak of eczema, psoriasis or hives
- Alopecia: loss of hair and/or beard
- Eyelid tremor
- Digestive disorders: diarrhea, constipation or even alternation of the two
- Sleep disorders
How to prevent and treat the decompensation of the company manager?
- Take care of yourself: It is important to take care of your body and mind by exercising regularly, eating healthy, getting enough sleep and taking time to relax and recharge.
- Be accompanied by a psychologist, a personal development coach, a sports coach, close friends or family, or other business leaders, it is important not to be alone and to share.
- Set boundaries: It is important to know how to say no and to set clear boundaries to avoid overloading your schedule and burning out. Don't hesitate to say no to requests that seem too overwhelming or that don't suit you.
- Manage your stress: It is important to find effective ways to manage your stress, such as relaxation techniques, meditation or activities that relax you. Avoid putting yourself under unnecessary pressure and learn to recognize the signs of overwork so you can take action in time.
- Take time for yourself: It is important to take time for yourself, to do what you enjoy and to recharge your batteries. This can be a physical activity, a hobby or any other activity that allows you to feel good and at peace with yourself. Time does not mean a lot of time, make some time available but of optimal quality.
Consult your osteopath regularly
Consult regularly, it can be just once or twice a year!
You are like a car. If your car is regularly serviced, you will avoid strange lights coming on and especially the breakdown. An osteo check-up is like a car check-up. The purpose of a head-to-toe check-up at your osteo is to remove all the little dysfunctions before the symptoms (the warning lights) appear and especially to avoid breakdown (acute pain, decompensation of the body).
